		<description>You may happily fly the Union Jack and inform The Complex Litigator: &#039;ize&#039; is only compulsory in the US so his correction correct for himself but not you. In civilisation either &#039;-ise&#039; or &#039;-ize&#039; is acceptable for the majority of verbs pronounced with an /-aiz/ ending. Some *must* be spelt &#039;-ise&#039; (&#039;advise&#039;,e.g., but not &#039;organise&#039;) but in others &#039;-ize&#039; had been seen and accepted since the 13th Century.

In British English usage the true rule is unresolved in this latter class and revolves around a conflict between the French and English imitations of Greek infinitival endings or their imitation of the Latin imitations of the same. We may tip in American barbarism or not; 500 years should settle this debate on this side of the pond.</description>
