The PM has been talking about Al-Megrahi (and appears to have developed expertise in Scots law – momentarily forgetting the Acts of Union 1707) and has, they say, told the Americans that we were junior partners in WWII against the Nazis. The Russians did rather a lot to defeat the Nazis. I suspect Cameron’s remarks will irritate a few people over here. Always good to see a prime minister on top of his brief. Churchill must be spinning in his grave!
It might be an idea for David Cameron – and his advisers – to read this… from The Firm
Online exclusive: Editor’s blog- Bomber, bomber, bomber.
HAT TIP to @Loveandgarbage for pointing me to Ian Hamilton QC’s very direct assessment…..
Cameron the Coward
I’d say it was worth a read!
This, also – from Scots Law News
It is rare for me to quote The Daily Mail… I do so on this occasion for our country…
Cameron describes Britain as ‘junior partner’ to Americans in 1940 – a year before Pearl Harbour
You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time.Abraham Lincoln, (attributed)16th president of US (1809 – 1865)
The next time you bump into Dave point him in the direction of the article written in the Scottish lawyers magazine, The Firm, “Online exclusive: Editor’s blog- Bomber, bomber, bomber.”
Not only will it explain what he should know about the Lockerbie trial but it will also explain to him what everyone else knows.
Thank you Gyges – I have placed on the main page. had not seen it! Powerful stuff!
There are four important issues to consider over Al Megrahi.
1) Was Scottish justice served by letting him free? If he was responsible for the Lockerbie bombings, it’s perfectly appropriate for anyone to say he was released too soon and for the wrong reasons. I don’t remember much rejoicing when he was released.
2) Stories are circulating that Tony Blair arranged for Al Megrahi to be released as part of a deal with Libya that was beneficial to BP. Again, it’s not anti-Scottish for Scots, English oranyone to want to probe that.
3) It has been asserted for a long time that the Algerians were framed for the Lockerbie bombings. See for example, this piece by John Pilger: http://www.johnpilger.com/page.asp?partid=547
I realise that Realpolitik sometimes sees a benefit in sending an innocent man to jail, but if you do, what’s the point of releasing him, if you don’t admit he’s innocent?
4) It has also been said that Al Megrahi was sprung from jail so that the Scottish courts would avoid the embarrassment of his appeal.
Putting the whole thing together, I believe the entire case reflects badly on the Scottish justice system, and deserves to be picked apart.
cameron in arse-licker shock. none hurt.
and the one surprising thing is that his knowledge of modern history is right up there with his legal expertise. is there no beginning to this man’s talent?
The UK may be a “junior partner” to the USA in modern times – (some might even say “lap dog”). In 1940-44 things were very different as the Daily Mail point out. We were then the British Empire (albeit approaching its closing days) and people from all over the world joined in the undoubtedly noble cause to defeat Nazism.
Cameron’s statement will be (rightly, I think) viewed as an insult to those who fought so gallantly during those very dark years of our history. It is simply not good enough for a British P.M. to behave this way.
I enjoyed reading the “bomber, bomber, bomber” link. Many thanks to gyges for that one. It is also very informative.
