Labour will not be in a strong position re anything to do with Iraq and, as a Lib Dem, Clegg could say that he hoped Straw would one day account for his involvement in “the illegal invasion of Iraq”. Of course, there has never been any formal ruling that the Iraq invasion was illegal even if many (including myself) remain unimpressed by the “revival” argument said to have made it legal. Of course, the majority of the Tories supported the war just as did the majority of Labour MPs.
Crobyn is right (IMHO). Afghanistan involvement by the UK should be the subject of a total reconsideration. The government is already getting into a mess by hinting at various dates for withdrawal, handover to the Iraqis etc.
Hardly a day passes without some U-turn or statement that a U-turn is being considered – the latest wheeze is the “death tax”. Of course, the coalition are not the only ones doing U-turns. I see that David Miliband now considers the release of al-Megrahi to be a “mistake”. Amazing what they will say to please the Americans.
I cannot claim to have any great powers of clairvoyance but I am glad that I said yesterday that there has never been any formal ruling that the Iraq War was illegal. Clegg is now likely to find himself in deep water for saying so:

Of course, Clegg argues that he was merely expressing his own view but I don’t think that was how it came across. Also, he is supposed to stick to government policy when answering questions and not his own views.
Oh dear! All these politicians are in a hole – they should stop digging.
