I’m very sorry: the final words of Teresa Lewis
The Independent: Her last meal was fried chicken and green peas, washed down with a can of Dr Pepper.
Her last outfit was a blue prison uniform and a pair of flip-flops. And her final words, uttered in the moments before they strapped her down to administer the lethal injection, were: “I’m very sorry.”
Teresa Lewis, a 41 year-old former drug addict with an IQ that puts her on the verge of being mentally disabled, became the first woman to be executed in the United States for five years when she was put to death at Greensville Correctional Center in Jarratt, Virginia.
I’m not a fan of the death penalty… obviously.
It is ironic, as the Indie reported…. that President of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, got in on the act. “He used a speech in New York this week to argue that the case typified Western double standards: Americans expressed outrage at the stoning of woman in Islamic countries, he argued, yet sanctioned the lethal injection of a mentally challenged woman in their own backyard.”
How can it be shared values?
Similarly, on the day that William Hague gaves his speech about putting human rights at the forefront of the FCO foreign policy and stating that there would be no double standards…
…The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe condemned the UK for its violation of the human rights of 75,000 convicted prisoners denied their human right to vote!
In the last few days the coalition criticised Labour for leaving them with this mess to sort out. I don’t recall either the Tories or LibDems challenging Labour’s stance on this in the House of Commons over the last 5 years!
Hypocrisy!
fells very unusual to be agreeing with i’minmedinnerjacket. first time for everything i guess.
Two wrongs never made a right.

well of course not obiter, but if the thuggish leader of iran is accurately reported when he says that the case:
‘typified Western double standards: Americans expressed outrage at the stoning of woman in Islamic countries, he argued, yet sanctioned the lethal injection of a mentally challenged woman in their own backyard.”
i can’t find anything to argue with.
SW – actually nor can I. He who lives in glass houses …. etc. As you can see from the link which I posted above, I have little time for any country which perpetuates the death penalty. Just my opinion of course but both Irana and the USA are wrong.
