Lawcast 111: US lawyer Dan Harris on China
Today I’m talking to Dan Harris, a US lawyer, a co-founder of law firm Harris & Moure in Seattle, Washington and co-author with law firm partner Steve Dickinson of the China Law Blog Dan gives a snapshot of law practice in China and talks about the need for businesses to have good advice if they plan to do business in China. We talk also about Intellectual Property laws and The Great Firewall of China.
Excellent! Dan’s blog is the best on law in China. I make it essential reading for my students,
Hi John – yes…. a very good blog. Thoroughly enjoyed doing the podcast! Let’s talk early this week. Escaped on saturday. Been a long day today with writing and enjoyable podcasts.
I think your students will find this podcast most interesting. Hope so.
Always enjoy Steve Dickenson’s work over at CLB, especially on the new anti-monopoly laws. IP Dragon is a great resource as well.
PS – Skype? I would have thought a QC and Washington State’s hotest boutique would be talking via a direct simultaneous HDTV satellite link-up, or has the recession hit Charon QC’s chambers as well? I always use it when chatting to folk in China and am almost always annoyed at myself for not being able to afford better.
FOARP – If I was in practice and a ‘real silk’ I would hope that I could afford a satellite link!
As it was at weekend I called Dan through Skype which I use for podcasts and he had skype on his home kitchen table – it was a Sunday!
Skype works well usually – although we did have a bit of interference on Sunday – happens occasionally!
@Charon QC – No problemo, it was definitely an interesting interview. Guess working for a company that had a dedicated long-distance phone connection spoiled me (not that I ever abused that service for personal calls, of course!).
My main beef with Skype is the way in which it is often not much better than free VOIP services (MSN, Yahoo etc.). It’s main advantage is being able to connect direct to phone lines.
Nicely done–both of you. Really glad I listened to it.
Skydur.com allow me to bypass China firewall with my favorite browser – Firefox on my Mac Book Pro. You can use it even at school (on Windows). I always watch Yutube at school as my internet at home is so slow. It supports SSL too so I can read my gmail. It’s just about $5 per month – check it out here – http://www.skydur.com
