There is a feasibility study by Inner Temple and Middle Temple ‘to investigate the potential benefits of merging their Libraries and creating a Joint Education and Advocacy Centre.’
The full text of the statement by Vivian Robinson QC, Treasurer of Inner Temple may be viewed here.
To get a rough idea of sentiment from members and others about the plan to merge the libraries I wonder if you would be kind enough to take a bit of time to fill in this Poll. I ask but one straightforward question. It does not pretend to be a scientific poll but it will, at least, give an idea of sentiment. You may of course, comment on the idea in the comments section below and I would be delighted if you would.(Previous comments are available in the comments section to this earlier post)
If you are a fellow blogger may I ask a favour and ask you to put a piece on your blog drawing attention to this poll. If you are a law librarian or academic or student, would you be kind enough to spread the word.
At least, with a poll, we will get some idea of the view of directly and indirectly interested parties.
The true reason for the merger is a secret proposal to build an ENORMOUS Texaco Petrol Filling Station accompanied by quite possibly the BIGGEST and most LUCRATIVE Subway Sarnie Emporium East of Bristol .
Transfat a la carte, anyone?
Must say Minxy, you Middle Templars are accepting the looming demise of your facilities with a surprising good grace. What’s the deal ? Have your benchers bought your acquiesence by allowing you to keep your kebab van ? Or is it just that you have finally come to accept that you simply cannot compete with the supremacy of all things Inner ?

Hi Charon,
It is good idea to hold this poll on your blog especially since the discussion on the Middle Temple Facebook page was taken down (which was apparently due to the fact that the Library isn’t allowed to express an opinion on the proposed merger).
Having spoken to the Librarian at Middle, I share her sense of depression at the idea of merging the two libraries. The libraries do co-operate re: Saturday opening hours but to bring Middle and Inner together would be a great shame – I have found both to be an invaluable resource as a student and find the service they provide the day-to-day benefit of being a Middle Templar.
It is the case that the libraries are not normally very busy but if you are in practice and they happen to have the one copy of Wolstenholme & Cherry’s Annotated Land Registration Act 1925 that’s available, you will consider their service priceless. Of course, a driving factor behind these changes must be cost – and whilst it is expensive to maintain two libraries with the outrageous prices of practitioner texts – it would be an error to forget the primacy of the library’s SERVICE.
Having a nice, shiny advocacy suite sounds like a good idea but I can’t why an entire library has to be sacrificed for it. Middle already has an advocacy suite and doesn’t use all the space it has on all-day, every-day – Queens’ Room, Parliament Chamber, Great Hall etc. I’m all for the Inns becoming more proactive in our education – it’s the future – but I’m not sure that this is the way to do it.
